ELSTAT: Trade deficit down 3.8% in Jan-Aug ’26 – up 3.6% in Aug

The total value of imports amounted to € 6,466.7 million in August 2026, in comparison with € 5,492.4 million in August 2025, recording an increase of 17.7%, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Thursday.

The corresponding value excluding oil products, in August 2026, recorded an increase of € 161.3 million or 3.7% and the corresponding value excluding oil products and ships, in August 2026, recorded an increase of € 214.5 million or 4.9%, in comparison with August 2025.

The total value of exports, in August 2026, amounted to € 4,261.1 million in comparison with € 3,363.7 million in August 2025, recording an increase of 26.7%. The corresponding value excluding oil products, in August 2026, recorded an increase of € 296.5 million or 12.5% and the corresponding value excluding oil products and ships, in August 2026, recorded an increase of € 298.5 million or 12.6%, in comparison with August 2025.

The deficit of the trade balance, in August 2026, amounted to € 2,205.6 million in comparison with € 2,128.7 million in August 2025, recording an increase of 3.6%. The corresponding value of deficit excluding oil products, in August 2026, recorded a decrease of € 135.2 million or 6.6% and the corresponding value excluding oil products and ships, in August 2026, recorded a decrease of € 84.0 million or 4.2%, in comparison with August 2025.

The total value of imports, for the 8-month period from January to August 2026, amounted to € 58,292.9 million in comparison with € 53,878.5 million for the corresponding period of the year 2025, recording an increase of 8.2%. The corresponding value excluding oil products recorded an increase of € 858.8 million or 2.0% and the corresponding value excluding oil products and ships recorded an increase of € 971.1 million or 2.3%, in comparison with the period from January to August 2025.

The total value of exports, for the 8-month period from January to August 2026, amounted to € 37,109.5 million in comparison with € 31,861.3 million for the corresponding period of the year 2025, recording an increase of 16.5%. The corresponding value excluding oil products recorded an increase of € 1,862.6 million or 7.6% and the corresponding value excluding oil products and ships recorded an increase of € 1,827.2 million or 7.5%, in comparison with the period from January to August 2025.

The deficit of the trade balance, for the 8-month period from January to August 2026, amounted to € 21,183.4 million in comparison with € 22,017.2 million for the corresponding period of the year 2025, recording a decrease of 3.8%. The corresponding deficit excluding oil products recorded a decrease of € 1,003.8 million or 5.3% and the corresponding deficit excluding oil products and ships recorded a decrease of € 856.1 million or 4.6%.
